Objects consisting of a variety of materials can be detected regardless of colour or shape to within millimetres. The sensor uses very high frequencies that are outside of the human's audible range, as a data carrier. The time it takes the ultrasonic wave to pass between the sensor and the object is the value for the distance or the position.
